Masked models strut the runway in Seoul fashion show

It’s safe and chic.

Models walking the runway of a recent fashion show in South Korea debuted a new type of accessory: a face mask. Wearing a colorful blend of traditional Korean outfits and modern designs, the models strutted the catwalk in Seoul on Friday, in a show of what could potentially become a new trend in fashion.

“The entire world is in a very difficult situation due to COVID-19,” the chief organizer of the event, Lim Yeon-hee, told The Associated Press.
“In addition to an economic slump, activities in culture, arts and sports have also been reduced,” Lim said, wearing a pink mask that matched her fedora hat. “We should all work together to overcome the crisis.”

“It is the tradition — of fabrics, shaped and details — that wins at the Korea Mask Fashion Show,” the traditional Milan-based magazine declared.

In February, models walking Marine Serre’s show during Paris Fashion Week also walked down the runway featuring fashion-forward facial coverings.

However, the 28-year-old French designer had designed the masks before the coronavirus outbreak. Her fashion house described them as “anti-pollution masks,” the BBC reported at the time.

Health authorities in South Korea, one of the world’s brightest success stories in the fight against the new coronavirus, have warned this week that the country could see more than 100 new infections for the first time since March, according to Reuters.

South Korea’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 41 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, bringing the total caseload in the East Asia nation of 51.6 million to 13,979 infections, including 298 deaths.
